Keeping It Clean: Ecotrail Wicklow’s Eco Commitment

At Ecotrail Wicklow, we’re not just about epic trails and scenic views, we’re seriously committed to keeping our environment clean, green, and thriving. That’s why eco-friendly practices are at the heart of everything we do.

From the get-go, we’ve focused on minimizing our environmental impact. That means:

  • Cutting down on single-use plastics
  • Encouraging public transport and carpooling
  • Running our races on sustainable trails that won’t damage delicate ecosystems
  • And teaming up with Pure, some amazing volunteers and our marshals to keep our routes litter-free
  • Working with Wicklow Wolf Brewing Company on the Tee or Tree Initiative

Teaming Up with Pure

One of our biggest green wins is our ongoing partnership with Pure (Protecting Uplands & Rural Environments), an incredible environmental initiative that tackles illegal dumping and fly-tipping in the Wicklow/Dublin Uplands. Together, we’re working hard to make sure all of the trails involved in the event are litter free.

In the lead-up to race weekend, we’re out on the ground, literally, with trail cleanups from Bray Seafront to Roundwood, covering scenic spots like Bray Head, Belmont, Sugarloaf, Ballyremon Commons, the Wicklow Mountains and the Wicklow Way.

Race Day = Clean Day

Our amazing Ecotrail marshals also double as litter pickers during the event, keeping things pristine while cheering you on. And just so you know: littering is an automatic disqualification, no exceptions. It goes against everything Ecotrail stands for, and we know our trail running community gets it.

Pure Director Ian Davis put it perfectly:

‘The Pure Mile has grown every year, from 5 miles back in 2009 to over 1,000 miles this year. We are delighted to be collaborating again with Ecotrail this year.  It’s extremely important that both participants and spectators see Wicklow the way it should be, Pure, Clean, and Pristine. This partnership ensures there’s no litter tarnishing the Garden of Ireland.’

We couldn’t agree more.
